Professor George Akpede is presently a Professor in the Department of Paediatrics, Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma. He was a Consultant Paediatrician (Neurology & Infectious Diseases) at the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital as well as Abia State University Teaching Hospital, and Irrua Specialist Teaching Hospital.
He was the Head of the Department of Paediatrics, University of Maiduguri/University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital. He was also the Head of the Department of Paediatrics, Irrua Specialist Teaching Hospital, Irrua.
He has served as the Provost, College of Medicine, Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma, Chairman, Nigerian Association of Colleges of Medicine (Committee of Provosts), Chief Medical Director, Irrua Specialist Teaching Hospital, and Chairman, Committee of Chief Medical Directors and Medical Directors, Federal Tertiary Hospitals.
He is a Fellow of the West African College of Physicians and Fellow of the National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria and he has served as resource person in several scientific seminars, workshops and public lectures. He is a member of the West African College of Physicians’ Expert Committee on Viral Haemorrhagic Fevers, Member National Lassa fever Rapid Response Committee and Chairman, National Lassa fever Stakeholders’ Forum of Nigeria.
Professor Akpede’s research interests include the diagnosis and management of acute Central Nervous System infections, with particular reference to acute bacterial meningitis, acute undifferentiated fevers, diarrhoeal diseases and viral haemorrhagic fevers, with particular reference to Lassa fever. He has authored or co-authored a remarkable number of publications from research in these and other areas of paediatrics and child health, and public health.
